February is Black History Month, a month in which we celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the history of the United States. This exhibit honors the achievements of the following twelve notable individuals, through a selection of resources from the MSU Libraries' collections:

Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806), Mathematician/Inventor
Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931), Journalist/Anti-lynching Crusader
Benjamin S. Carson (b. 1951), Neurosurgeon
Charles R. Drew (1904-1950), Surgeon/Blood Researcher
Marcus Garvey (1887-1940), Philosopher/Leader
Matthew Alexander Henson (1866-1955), Arctic Explorer
Mae C. Jemison (b. 1956), Astronaut/Physician
Nat Love (1854-1921), Cowboy
Jan Ernest Matzeliger (1852-1889), Inventor
Sarah Breedlove Walker (1867-1919), Businesswoman
Cathay Williams (1844-1892?), Female Buffalo Soldier
Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), Historian/Educator
